Three ways to calculate percentages — pick the one you need.
To find what % A is of B: (A ÷ B) × 100. To find X% of N: (X ÷ 100) × N. To find percentage change: ((New − Old) ÷ Old) × 100. To find original value before a % increase: divide final by (1 + rate). Before a % decrease: divide by (1 − rate).
A percentage expresses one number as a fraction of another, scaled to 100. To find what percent A is of B: (A / B) x 100. To find X% of a number N: (X / 100) x N. This calculator handles all three common types: basic percentage, percentage change, and reverse percentage.
Percentage change = ((New - Old) / Old) x 100. A positive result is an increase, a negative result is a decrease. If sales go from $50,000 to $65,000, the increase is ((65,000 - 50,000) / 50,000) x 100 = 30%.
To find the original value before a percentage increase or decrease, divide the final value by (1 + rate) for increases, or (1 - rate) for decreases. If a product costs $85 after a 15% discount, the original price was 85 / 0.85 = $100.
