Quick Answer

Type your expression directly or use the keypad. Functions like sin(), cos(), tan(), log(), and sqrt() can be typed or clicked. Use parentheses to control order of operations. Toggle degrees/radians for trig functions. Press = or Enter to calculate.

About this scientific calculator

This calculator supports standard arithmetic plus scientific functions: sine, cosine, tangent and their inverses, base-10 logarithm, natural log, exponents, square roots, and the constants pi and e. You can type expressions directly or use the keypad.

Degrees vs. radians

Trigonometric functions work in either degrees or radians. Most school-level math uses degrees (0 to 360). Radians are the standard in higher math and physics. A full circle is 2pi radians. Make sure your calculator is in the right mode before computing trig values.

Order of operations

This calculator follows standard order of operations (PEMDAS/BODMAS): parentheses first, then exponents, then multiplication and division left to right, then addition and subtraction. Use parentheses to control the order when entering complex expressions.

Frequently asked questions

What is a scientific calculator?

A scientific calculator computes functions beyond basic arithmetic: trigonometry (sin, cos, tan), inverse trig, logarithms, exponents, square roots, factorials, and constants like pi and e.

What is the difference between sin, cos, and tan?

In a right triangle: sine (sin) = opposite divided by hypotenuse, cosine (cos) = adjacent divided by hypotenuse, tangent (tan) = opposite divided by adjacent. They describe the relationship between angles and side lengths.

What is the difference between log and ln?

log (or log10) is the base-10 logarithm. ln is the natural logarithm with base e (approx 2.718). log10(100) = 2 because 10 squared = 100. Natural logs appear frequently in calculus and growth models.

What does the EXP button do on a calculator?

EXP enters scientific notation. Pressing 3 EXP 6 inputs 3 x 10 to the 6th = 3,000,000. It is used for very large or very small numbers.
